Darlington itself offers you a town centre that is packed with shops, a bustling indoor market and a large market square that is home to general markets on Mondays and Saturdays and a great farmers’ market on some Fridays. The square is also the venue for many entertainment events throughout the year, including children’s activities, musical entertainment and parades.

Darlington has a diverse history: its roots can be traced back to Saxon times. It is well known as the birthplace of railways: the first public railway ran through Darlington in 1825. The development of the railway was encouraged by the town’s wealthy Quaker businessmen. You will find the railway museum about a mile to the north of Darlington town centre. This museum houses the original Locomotion No. 1 that pulled the very first train on the Darlington to Stockton Railway.

Other Darlington attractions include an art gallery, many historical churches, the Dolphin Leisure Centre, parks and the Brick Train sculpture.
